Huma Energy Gel

Energy Gels. Yes…I’m a believer. They give me a boost, I think. And if they don’t, well they make me believe I’ve been given a boost. Sometimes, that is all that matters.

I was a bit naive about the Energy Gel racket when I first started using them. And despite the fact that last year I ran 3 (three) half marathons, I never used them. In fact, at the last one I ran in October, they handed them out for free at the start line. I said “thanks”, and immediately stashed it in my pocket even though I noticed quite a few people ripping them open right then and there. Hmmmmm…what was with this energy get thing, anyway?

A month later, and I had committed to Grandma’s. I began to read up on runner’s nutrition, learning that perhaps I should be taking these little beauties especially with runs over an hour. I had no idea that you needed to re-up that glucose after a certain amount of time. In fact, it is safe to say I knew nothing about how the body works during a run. But I learned quickly why in these 3 (three) half marathons I may have felt myself hitting the proverbial “wall” at 10 miles or so.

So, as soon as I was able, I began to buy them. I tried a few brands/flavors, at least the ones that were available at local retail stores. And there isn’t much out there except for GU and Cliff brand. I preferred GU to the two, and started using those regularly on long runs, settling finally on the Espresso Love flavor.

Yeah, I know there are chews out there as well, but they don’t work for me. I spend the remainder of my run trying to get them out of my teeth and my permanent retainer. Besides, the choking hazard scares the hell out of me.

Months later, I sign up for Runner Box and inside is, what I will learn later, my most prized possession. That is the HĂĽma Chia Energy Gel. By far, this is the best yet. Easy enough on the tummy that I can take the entire pack (I could only muster half a pack of the GU gels at a time), tastes great, and affords me some kind of mini rush…at least for a few miles. And that is better than nothing. They come in Strawberry and Apple Cinnamon.

The other little beauty I stumbled upon was the Vega Sport Endurance Gel. These are a bit different. Kinda chewy in a wierd kinda way. They grow on you, for sure. At first I didn’t care for the texture. But then I began to like it because it is almost like a little snack. It comes in two flavors as well, and they are both delicious, although I prefer the Orange Zest over the Raspberry.

The bonus about both of these brands is that they are all-natural. Nothing like natural flavors! And they don’t give you a sugar crash. Sometimes those GU gels do that for me.

So, that is my Gel review. I’ll be carrying these two brands along with me on marathon day.
