Training Tip Tuesday – Smile

Seriously. Smile! Why wouldn’t you? What could be SO wrong that you can’t squeak out a smile?

Here is my take on it.

Let’s say you are running. It is hot. Your leg hurts. Your head hurts. You are hungry, thirsty, stressed. You glance at your Garmin and you are going a minute slower a mile than you expected to. Aww, dang it to hell. What else is left to do but smile?

Smiling is an endorphin rush in itself. It is amazing what it does for your brain. It triggers an immediate response to the rest of your body that says, “Holy crap. I’m running and I’m having a blast even though this run really sucks!” I dare you to try it.

And as you are smiling, think of something funny or heart warming. Think of a joke you heard, or the way your children gave you the evil eye this morning when you asked them if they brushed their teeth.

If you are in a race, smile at the fans on the sidelines. Wave and say thank you! Hoot and holler as you pass them. Better yet, give THEM a round of applause! Every time you see a camera, SMILE and wave. Your race photos will come out better. And I guarantee you, no matter how fast or slow you finish, you will feel 100% better than you would have if you had a sourpuss Sally look on your face. Why? Because smiling changes your mood. It effects your attitude in ways that you cannot fathom. It will put you in a better place for your next run instead of bringing you down to a point where you say “why should I even bother trying this again?”

Well, you should, and you will, because you will remember that last crappy run still made you happy because it made you smile.

It is so easy to find reasons and excuses as to why you did so poorly on a run or a race. But instead, I challenge you to come up with reasons why you did so well!

“Well, considering it was 90° out this morning, I really rocked that run!” GRIN

“My knee is really bothering me, but hey! I got that 6 miles in!” GRIN

“I didn’t have time for a 10 miler this morning, but still, I squeezed in that 2.” GRIN

“Considering it rained like the dickens for this race, I still finished. And look! I’m soaking wet.” GRIN

That’s the time you must keep on trying
Smile, what’s the use of crying?
You’ll find that life is still worthwhile
If you just smile.

I still can not get over that photogenic guy. I never look even close to that when I am running. I think that the next race I do I am going to stop and pose for the camera!
Thanks for the post…That in its self made me smile.
