Training Tip Tuesday – Speed Bumps

Let me ask you…what does the remainder of your life look like? Do you suspect everything will go exactly as you plan? What will happen if it doesn’t? Then what?

In the words of Sheryl Crow, “Everyday is a winding road.” Sure, you get a little bit closer, but there is no telling when you will get there.

Thus the same goes with our running. Rarely anything ever goes as planned. There are speed bumps along the way. But know this…these speed bumps don’t necessarily have stop signs before them. If they did, we’d never get over them. We’d have to back up and start again. What would be the point in that?

What is my point, you may be asking. My point is that we all encounter obstacles.

Does any of this sound familiar?

  • “I just don’t have the time to run right now.”
  • “I don’t see me coming out of this injury well enough to ever run again.”
  • “I’ll never PR this race. Why bother trying?”
  • “I can’t even run 10 miles. How could I run a half marathon?”

Thump, thump, thump, thump.

Road full of speed bumps

Speed Bumps Ahead

My question is, can you really see into the future? Do you really know how anything will turn out? How do you know what is going to happen? Are you GOD?

I’m thinking not. And I’m thinking that if you give up on yourself, you will never know your potential. Yes, shit happens. Yes, we get injured. Yes, the kids get sick. Yes, the bills get harder to pay and we have to work more and run less. But do we have to give it up the dream completely? Do we have to stop and back up and start over again?

Here is another thought provoking question. You’re not feeling it and you have that 10K in two weeks. And you question yourself. “Should I even bother?” And a complete stranger comes up to you and says “I have it under good authority that you will PR that race.” Who do you believe? And who are you to question who to believe? You know, it may not be your best race. But it just may be your best race.

Mother of a Speed Bump

Mother of a Speed Bump

Don’t let life’s speed bumps determine your course. They are there. You will come upon them SO many times in your running career. Don’t allow them to steer you off course. And for goodness sake, don’t stop! They are there to slow you down. And more than likely there is a justifiable reason for that which goes well beyond your capability of understanding.  But, they aren’t there to bring you to a halt. Just plow ahead. Forge on.

And install a good pair of shock absorbers.

Did you ever encounter a speed bump where you questioned your ability to forge ahead? How did you overcome it?
