Sound Running – RoadNoise Running Vest Review and #Giveaway

My husband should have been a safety commissioner of some kind. He loves to fill me with fear before I head out on a long road run and then tell me how I can protect myself.

It’s not that I don’t appreciate his words of wisdom, but I pretty much know it all already. I mean, I run the roads damn near every day. And he tells me over and over and over again…just in case I didn’t hear him the first time.

Here are just a few tidbits I might hear as I head out the door.

  • “Run against traffic.”
  • “Wear super bright colors.”
  • “Bring your phone!”
  • “Make sure you turn the ringer ON so I can reach you.”
  • “Is there some way you can carry this pepper spray? How about a pistol?”
  • “Figure out a way to send me your route so I can track you.”
  • “If someone starts chasing you, RUN FAST. They’ll never catch you.”
  • “Don’t turn up your music or podcasts too loud. You need to hear what is happening around you.”

Today, we’ll tackle that last one. And I’m happy to report, I found a really great solution!

The folks over at RoadNoise asked me to test drive their premier running vest which allows not only for maximum visibility, but also has an external speaker system, which integrates with your smart phone or music pod. The concept is rather simple. There are speakers at your shoulders, with a pouch up front with a wire and plug to hook into your equipment, and hold it securely as you run.

Plug it in, turn it up, and hit the road. With integrated speakers right below your ears, you have the sounds you want without eliminating the sounds around you. These lightweight, form fitting running vests are styled to fit will, look nice, and sound great on every run – day or night!

RoadNoise vests give you the ability to hear your own footsteps, your breathing, and your surroundings along with your favorite music. There are no dangling cords while you run. Just plug in your device and you are off running.

When my husband first saw the device, he was impressed. He commented on how this was the perfect way to listen to something while being able to hear stuff happening around you. In fact, he would love to have one for himself while he walks because it is a great way to hold his device, listen to his tech podcasts, and control our unruly dogs all at the same time.

Me and the RoadNoise Vest

Me and the RoadNoise Vest

My first experiences with the RoadNoise vest took a bit of getting used to. I’m so used to having earphones in my ears that hearing stuff around me was a bit unnerving. I could hear traffic approaching behind me, I could hear the wind, I could hear conversations of neighbors in driveways, I could hear catcalls, and whistles (Yeah, I still get a few…) and I could hear dogs barking, yet still hear my broadcast After a few runs, however, it has grown on me. And it has really made me aware as to how unaware I have been while running on the road with earphones in my ears. This is a good thing, even though I might not be the first to admit to my husband that he has a point about ‘the listening to the music too loud’ thing.

Yet, when I pass other walkers or runners on the road, I am rather conscious that they can hear what I’m listening to. Although this doesn’t bother me while I’m road running, I could see how it could be distracting during a race or a run in a community park. I think for those circumstances, and for the sake of those folks in earshot, I’d stick with earphones, just out of common courtesy.

BUT, the great thing is, you can still use the vest with earphones! Just tuck in the wire, or remove it and the speakers for use with your own headphones! I suggest this, because the vest is so light weight and comfortable, let alone very breathable and amazingly visible with it’s reflective strips of color in front and back. It definitely can preform double duty. The electronics are easy to remove from the vest for laundering, and for using earphones in other situations, if you prefer.

And the visibility of the vest has been noted by some who have stopped me to ask where I got the vest. They are even more amazed by the speakers in it. Obviously, I wear neon, so this just adds to my bright attire, bur for those who prefer to wear grays and blacks (to which I’ll never understand why), then this vest will help you be seen, PLUS allow you to hear your surroundings as you listen to your running play list or podcast.

The vest runs true to size! I learned this the hard way. Originally I sized up to allow for the thicker layers of winter, but this was a mistake. Order by your shirt size for certain. There is room for layers. You want it to fit snug so it doesn’t ride up or so that your phone doesn’t bounce around.
