Mega-K Review and #Giveaway

Every once in a while, a product comes along that peaks my interest. I’m a fish oil girl. I have done enough research and have read enough articles to know that today’s population of American’s need a Fish Oil supplement. The reason is two fold. First, our foods are so over processed. We have been led to believe that vegetable oils and the like are “heart healthy”. The fact of the matter is they are not. They are loaded with omega-6’s. Most omega-6 fatty acids are consumed in the diet from foods containing these vegetable oils, such as linoleic acid. Excessive amounts of linoleic acid can contribute to inflammation and result in heart disease, cancer, asthma, arthritis and depression.

Because most foods on the market (i.e. Little Debbie’s, grocery store bakery products, breads, rolls, etc.) are made with these oils, we are on omega-6 overload. Sure, they may be free of trans-fats, but they overrunneth with omega-6. An important note about omega-6 is that your body can not manufacture it on it’s own. It needs to obtain omega-6 from an outside source.

A smaller player in the game is the omega-9s. The primary omega-9 fatty acid is oleic acid. Omega-9 fatty acids, commonly referred to as monounsaturated fatty acids, do offer important health benefits. Research has shown that omega-9 fatty acids are protective against metabolic syndrome and cardiovascular disease risk factors. Because omega-9 fatty acids have been shown to increase HDL (“good”) cholesterol and decrease LDL (“bad”) cholesterol, they help eliminate plaque buildup in the arteries, which may cause heart attack or stroke. So, omega-9 is beneficial. However, the difference between omega-9 and omega-6 fatty acids is that the body can manufacture it’s own source of omega-9. But, it needs a proper balance of omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids to do so.

Enter the omega-3. This is perhaps the most important of the fatty acid.

Omega-3 fatty acids (ALA, or alpha-linolenic acid) correct imbalances in modern diets that lead to health problems. Eating foods rich in omega-3 fatty acids can help lower the risk of chronic diseases such as heart disease, stroke and cancer, as well as lower LDL or “bad” cholesterol.

A diet high in ALA helps reduce the risk of heart disease and stroke. It naturally lowers cholesterol and triglyceride levels, and strengthens the blood vessels. It prevents the build-up of harmful fat deposits in the arteries. But the average American diet does not have the amount of omega-3 fatty acids needed by our bodies to achieve the benefits.

Our hunter gatherer ancestors ate an approximate ratio of omega-3 to omega-6 of 1:1. This is the ideal ratio. Research has shown that they were free of the modern inflammatory diseases, like heart disease, cancer, and diabetes, that are the primary causes of death and morbidity today. But, about 150 years ago, the amount of omega-6 in our diets shot up markedly. Enough so, that it reduced the effects of the omega-3 benefits. Our oil sources changed from that of animal sources to vegetable and processed sources because of the modern vegetable oil industry and the use of cereal grains as feed for domestic livestock.

Domestic livestock doesn’t have nearly the same omega profile as grass-fed or wild animal meat.

This chart shows the omega-3 and omega-6 values in several oils consumed in America today.

Omega profiles in oils

I encourage you to read this article by Chris Kresser, but I believe you get the idea.

We NEED more omega-3.

Cognitive Supplement's Mega-K

One for me and one for YOU!

Cognitive Supplements recently contacted me with an amazing offer. They are allowing me to try their products AND allowing me to share it with YOU!

Here is what they say about their Mega-K product:

Mega-K: The Purest Krill Oil

Our Mega-K Pure Antarctic E. Superba Krill Oil is a powerful krill oil — and the purest one out there. We only extract from the Euphasia Superba species of krill, small crustaceans from the Euphausiacea order found throughout the world’s oceans, not from oils of inferior species. We sort through and only select the finest krill, and then from the top FDA-certified producer, use a patented, cold-extraction process to get what we need to make this great supplement.

Mega-K gives you 48 times more Omega-3 strength than fish oil does, according to the Oxygen Radical Absorbency Capacity, and 20 times more than other krill oils. It’s the most bio-available form of Omega-3 fatty acids, and also contains phospholipids and a strong amount of antioxidants, including Astaxanthin.

This Cognitive Supplements product works wonders for your body. Here are some of the benefits of taking Mega-K:
