If you aren’t from a northern tier state, then I guess you probably didn’t realize that in the dead of the summer, the sun hangs around much longer than it does in a state closer to the equator. Anytime we get a visitor to our home in June or July, it is the sunrise and sunset times that pretty much throw them for a loop. From approximately 4:30 am to 9:45 pm, it is light enough outside to see the hand in front of your face. That is a lot of daylight hours! So, not only is Minnesota the “Land of 10,000 Lakes”, but it is also the “Land of the Never-ending Day”, at least for a few weeks.

If you run outside early in the morning, or late in the evening, this gives plenty of opportunity to get out there and get it done without the need for any external safety lights on your person, although it is always a good idea to wear them.

Minnesota likes to take all of this daylight to their advantage, and occasionally, you’ll find a great event that takes place in the evening hours. These events can be fun, especially if after events are planned…like, perhaps…BEER.

Yeah, it happens!

I’ve done a few evening races around the Twin Cities and it’s always been a hoot.

Coming up on July 19th, however, is one that I have not participated in yet, despite my 18 years here (well, I’ve only been running for 6 of those).

It is the #Torchlight5K!

Whether you’re a dedicated runner or just someone who jogs from the couch to the fridge, the Twin Cities Orthopedics Torchlight 5K presented by NOOMA in Minneapolis is fun for everyone! Grab your family, friends and running shoes because this event starts with a bang and ends with a brew. That’s right, our legendary post-race party features musical entertainment and complimentary refreshments. It’s the party of the year that just happens to start with a run!

Now, this sounds fun! I happen to know that in the past, the weather can play a big factor in this event. Minnesota generally has only 2 actual full blown weeks of summer temperatures, and these can happen anytime between June 1 and August 31. And they don’t necessarily happen all at once. But, the fun thing about these evening events, is they are just that. Fun! No hurries, no worries, no PR’s, no need for speed. It’s just an event to get out there, mingle with fellow runners, and bask in the glory of a Minnesota summer! This particular event coincides with the annual Aquatennial Parade. The cool thing is my daughters have the opportunity to march in that parade with their High School Marching Band every summer. As they are now seniors, it will be their last opportunity to do so.

The Twin Cities Orthopedics Torchlight 5K presented by NOOMA starts near the historic Basilica of Saint Mary and follows the Aquatennial’s CenterPoint Energy Torchlight Parade route. The course offers up close views of the Guthrie, Gold Medal Park, the Mighty Mississippi River, Stone Arch Bridge and St. Anthony Main
