Sleep.

Overrated?

The verdict is still out.

For, as many articles as you will find on why sleep is so important and necessary for good health, you’ll find just as many articles that claim the opposite.

Although, that might not be completely accurate. It’s not to say that sleep isn’t important, it is to say that quality of sleep, not quantity of sleep, is the true factor when it comes to it being beneficial.

Many people can get buy with 5 or 6 hours of shut eye, as long as that shut eye is solid.

I think my issue is, getting 5 or 6 solid hours of sleep, somehow has to happen over an 8 or 9 hour period. I wish I knew why this was.

Lately, and by lately I mean since 2015, I have this habit of waking up 2 to 3 hours after I fall asleep…and being wide awake. This number can vary widely, depending on what time I actually fall asleep, but generally I wake up between 1 am and 3 am on most nights. If I can fall back asleep right away, well, then I’ll get a good night’s rest. If not, I’m up tossing and turning for upwards of three hours, praying that I’ll make it through the following day on the little sleep I have gotten.

This sucks.

I’ve tried it all from melatonin (which has the opposite effect on me) to Advil PM, to NyQuil PM, to Sleepy Time Tea, to whiskey, to eating before bed, to not eating before bed, to sleep concoctions that I’ve researched on Doctor Google. Somehow, nothing works consistently.

As you know, I’m a biohacker. I listen to a lot of podcasts about how to improve my health, fitness, and sports performance, one of which is the Ben Greenfield Fitness Podcast. He talks a lot about biohacking sleep, and for the most part, I have had success with many of his suggestions. I’m guessing this is because he is a pretty badass athlete, which is what I consider myself to be, despite the fact that I am much older than he is, and not nearly as impressive, or as good looking, for that matter.

According to Ben (and, I quote) your “endocannabinoid system (ECS) regulates everything from relaxation, to eating, sleeping, inflammation and even cognitive function. In a nutshell, your ECS is responsible for making sure your entire body is working optimally. There are two types of cannabinoid receptors found throughout your body (CB1 and CB2), but they are most abundant in your brain and immune system.

CBD is an abbreviation for cannabidiol, a prominent naturally-occurring cannabinoid component found in cannabis that comprises up to 40% of the plant and helps to regulate your ECS. After THC (Δ9-tetrahydrocannabinol) – which is the psychoactive component of cannabis most often associated with marijuana – CBD is by far the most studied natural cannabinoid, especially when it comes to medical benefits and addressing issues such as insomnia and anxiety. According to many researchers, CBD may be the single most important cannabinoid ever discovered.

Despite popular perceptions of marijuana, cannabidiol is a cannabinoid devoid of any type of strange psychoactive effect, although it can help with cognitive performance, memory, focus, etc.. Now, Ben takes a few of these capsules at one time. I have found that this amount is way too much for me. The fact that I am probably teeny tiny in comparison to Ben might have something to do with that (see photo above). Sometimes I find that one capsule is a bit too much. I have also found that it can give me loose stools if I take too high of a dose. In order to combat this, I simply open the capsule and put half of it into a cup of tea or hot water, then I sip on it before bedtime. Or, I mix the contents of an entire capsule it in a mini shot jar and keep it next to my bedside so I can take small sips as needed.
